I was sad to hear of the passing of GAA coach John Morrison last week. I knew the great work he has done with counties over many years, but the tributes which came pouring in were all about how brilliant he was as a coach and more so as a people person.
An “inspiration”, “visionary” and “legend of the sport” were phrases repeatedly used to describe him. But it was more the small things, such as his acts of love and kindness which really got me thinking. In one interview I heard how John gave all the Mayo players a Valentine’s card each before training one
Valentine’s day. I think there was a little joke in each card but the thought and effort was there. He would have been quoted many times saying how much he loved each player on his team and that showed in his commitment and passion in
each training session and game.
